Summer sports: Dolomiti AmpezzaneTrekking FALORIA SORAPIS
Sorapis Lake Magnificent hike to discover one of the hidden Dolomite jewels, the Lake of the Sorapis Description From Passo Tre Croci, take the unpaved road behind the small church marked as trail #213. Among fir and larch trees you gradually gain elevation towards the Tardeiba clearing, where the woods give way to bare meadows and a few screes. Here you have two alternatives. You can either head uphill along the narrow gully towards Forcella Marcuoira on trail #216, this route is shorter but arduous. Otherwise you can get over the ridge by ascending a less steep trail with a simple and easy portion with fixed iron cable for support, trail #223. Both routes intersect in the solitary and wild Cadin del Laudo. After another short and easy stretch with cable support, you start your descent towards the amphitheatre of the Sorapis. Suddenly, while still high on the trail, you will be able to spot a small patch with strikingly unreal colours. It is the lake of the Sorapis. Plunged in the dark green of mugo pines and wrapped in the grey shades of the surrounding mountains, the descent towards the amazing blue of the lake will be very pleasant. Once you arrive at its shores, take time to contemplate this magnificent site, wander around the lake and gaze at it from different view points. The vertical cliffs dropping into its emerald waters, the white sands of its shores, the snow-fields lying on the surrounding slopes, the imposing walls of the Sorapis and the graceful and soaring shape of the "Dito di Dio" (God's Finger), all create a scenery of unequalled beauty. The return trail #215 has some exposed stretches with iron cable and convenient iron ladders. Rifugio Faloria - Rio Gere - Mandres Leisurely descent, the second stretch is along the forest upper limit. Description From Rifugio Faloria hike down a pleasant mule-track, marked by signpost 212 as far as Ristorante Rio Gere. From there continue along a short stretch of the National Road 48 in the direction of Cortina until you meet the sign indicating trail 206 to Mandres. Walk through the woods for a while and then across an area covered by mugo pines at the foot of Mount Faloria, where you will be likely to spot some chamois. Below the trail, there is the peculiar lake of Costalares. Then walk again through the woods to descend to Mandres and, from there, to the village of Pecol. CRISTALLO - MIETRESRio Gere - CortinaLeisurely walk over meadows and through woods. Description From Rio Gere, where the chairlifts for Cristallo and Mount Faloria depart, take trail # 211 to Rifugio Mietres. Walking through a fabulous larch wood you arrive first at Malga Larieto and then at Rifuglio Mietres, where you will enjoy an expansive view over Cortina. The way down is over gentle grassy slopes towards Col Tondo and farther on to Guargné (15 minutes on foot from the centre of Cortina). Forcella Zumeles - Val Padeon A demanding ascent to reach and cross the beautiful Creste di Zumeles. Description From Rio Gere, take trail #211 towards Rifugio Mietres. Do not go down to the mountain inn, but bear right on your trail as far as the intersection with trail #201 leading to Forcella Zumeles. Your way is now uphill, with a lot of switchbacks up the steep grassy slopes of the Crepe di Zumeles. Each break you take will be rewarded by the expansive view of Cortina below and the charming close-up view of the Pomagagnon walls ahead. At the saddle, a striking vista suddenly unfolds before you: the majestic Monte Cristallo. After a well-deserved resting stop, you descend the other slope towards Val Padeon. Once you reach the unpaved road coming from Son Forca, continue towards Ospitale on trail # 203. At Ospitale you may take the bus (bus service Dobbiaco – Cortina). Verify bus schedules. Passo Tre Croci - Son Forca - Ospitale Charming and pleasant hike below the southern slopes of Mount Cristallo. Description From the Tre Croci Pass, that can be reached from Cortina by a convenient bus service, take the easy trail 203 to Son Forca pass. From there you can either walk up to Rifugio Son Forca or down along Val Padeon on a smooth unpaved road as far as Rifugio Ospitale. To avoid the uphill stretch you can take the chairlift from Rio Gere to Rifugio Son Forca. From Rifugio Ospitale you can get back to Cortina by the "Dobbiaco-Cortina" bus- service. TOFANAAround Col RosàLoop itinerary; opportunity to visit the Cascate di Fanes (Fanes waterfalls). From the hut at the entrance of the Park, head for Pian de Loa, then follow the unpaved road (trail #10), a gradual ascent will lead you to Ponte Alto. A little farther, on you right, you will find a sign for the Cascate di Fanes. By a short diversion you may decide to visit the waterfalls and their remarkable drop into a deep canyon. Pay great attention: the short ledge leading to the falls has some serious exposure, yet is laid out with iron cables for hand support. Resume your route and at the next trail junction bear left onto trail #401 and then #408. A somewhere steep ascent will take you to Forcella Posporcora, separating the Col Rosà group from the Tofane group. After reaching the saddle, the trail descends with numerous switchbacks as far as the unpaved road of Pian de Ra Spines (trail #417). Turning left you will go back to Pian de Loa, the right-hand trail will take you to the Olimpia Campsite at Fiames. Sentiero Astaldi A spectacular hiking route with fixed cables for support leading across Raibl rock layers. Description From Rifugio Dibona climb up trail 403 to Rifugio Giussani as far as the sign for Sentiero Astaldi. This itinerary runs along a ledge equipped with fixed iron cables and is highly spectacular because it goes through a Raibl rock layer, characterised by different colour rocks. Though it is not a difficult mountaineering route, the exposure requires the necessary equipment for vie ferrate (harness and safety rope). At the end of the ledge, climb up to Rifugio Pomedes where you will enjoy spectacular views over the Ampezzo valley. From the inn, walk down to Rifugio Duca d’Aosta and from there take trail 421 back to Rifugio Dibona. Difficulty itinerary Easy, but the safety rope is needed for the stretch with iron cable. CINQUE TORRIRif. Scoiattoli - Rif. 5 Torri - Bai de DonesEasy walk through the woods in contact with nature. Description Il Rifugio Scoiattoli, starting point for this route, can be conveniently reached by the chairlift starting from Bar Ristorante Bai de Dones, just off the National rd. 48 of the Dolomites. Transport to the valley station can also be arranged by the bus service leaving from Cortina. From Rifugio Scoiattoli (2230m) take the unpaved road leading in 10 minutes to Rifugio Cinque Torri (2137), just beneath Torre Grande. Continue on the small paved road for about 1 kilometre - the road is open to traffic only during the low season periods - as far as a large hairpin after a level stretch. Here watch for a large sign indicating the trail descending through the woods to the small lakes of Bai de Dones. In another 10 minutes the chairlift bottom station is reached. |
